Question about proxy server & internet games.

Is it possible to have a game that cannot connect online (like Silk Road Online to Adelphia Cable Internet), be able to connect to a proxy server to be allowed to connect? If so, is something like the Dante SOCKS server what I am looking for? (SOCKS proxy servers allow client-server applications [like a game client connecting to a server?]from what I understand; if wrong please correct me.)

After finding a good source of information (just from a post on an online AA:SF forum), I concluded that I need something called OpenVPN? Or I can also use SSH to forward information from a game correct?
