Quad port NIC with Tulip Problem

I have a quad port ZNYX 346 (not the 346Q) that uses the tulip driver. It was recognized and working flawlessly with a SUSE 10 test system. However, now that I have set it up (on the same box) with Debian Sarge with the 2.6.8 kernel the card is inoperable. I get errors telling me that the card has a missing or erased EPROM. It gives this error for all four of the DEC 21140 controllers on the card. I guess this card uses only one EPROM and it is located with the first port. I saw somewhere that some bios will search for the EPROM in a reverse order giving an error of a missing EPROM. Supposedly there is a flag you can set before you compile the tulip driver that can compensate for this. Unfortunately I have lost the URL for this reference.

Anyone out there know how to remedy this problem with Debian Sarge? I prefer to use Debian over SUSE 10 just because I'm more familiar with Debian, and all our other servers are using Debian. I don't have any exp with compiling modules for the kernel. How do I recompile the tulip driver as a module....isn't it built in to the kernel? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Never seen an eror like that but the version could have had a buggy tulip module. Not a debian user but I would recompile to a newer kernel like 2.6.14.3. You can get it at http://www.kernel.org . Several post here on compiling the kernel.

Edit:
Did a quick search at http://ww.google.com/linux on quad tulip and seems many bugs have existed over time. You might go there and search around on the subject. I am sure there is some kind of update tool for debian. Many other distros have update tools so debian might have one. Most update tools include things like ready to run kernels.

Sorry I could not be of more help.

Still having issues with this card. I tried it again and it works perfectly under SuSE 10.0, but I can't get it to work any other way. I have now tried Kernel 2.6.8 and 2.6.12. I have also tried the following based on info from www.scyld.com:

modprobe tulip reverse_probe=1

I get an error saying that this module doesn't support the reverse_probe=1 parameter even though it explicitly states that it does at www.scyld.com.

I am now determined to figure out how to get this to work with Debian. Any help/expertise would be appreciated.
