prolific usb pl2302 -- linux <-> windows?

hello all,
I have a prolific USB to USB "Network" cable. The linux plusb driver supports it and it works fine if both ends are connected to linux boxes.
However, if one end is connected to windows, windows reports "network cable unplugged" and nothing works.
This may be the wrong forum for this, but... does anyone have experience with these?
my personal speculation is somehow the windows driver needs to be told via the cable that the other end is ready... something the linux driver could maybe be modded to do?
any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
f
