Unhappy Problems with MDK 9 and Cable

I'm trying to use my cable modem with a router, in conjunction with Mandrake 9.
The router is a DLink DI-704P.

My problem is, I cannot get linux to recognize the connection with or without the router hooked up.
My ISP (Rogers Cable in Toronto) uses a Dynamic DHCP, and I think this is a source of some of my grief.

Quote from an e-mail from my ISP.
Quote:
Ensure that you have setup a dynamic TCP/IP connection (ie. obtain IP address from DHCP server automatically), as the Rogers DHCP server only responds this way, NOT static.
Anyway, any settings in the MDK Control PAanel or tips for me would be greatly appreciated as I really want to get Linux raring on this computer, and the main purpose of this box is internet.

TIV,
Chris

Well first thing first. Is your router getting an IP from the cable company? You can check this by loggin into it.

Second. Is your router set to hand out ips via DHCP or does it require manual static IPs?

Third. Head to the Mandrake Control Center -> Netowrk and Internet -> Connection
In the Kan Configuration box it should read something like this:
Code:
Interface Ip Add Protocol Driver State
  eth0 static tulip up
The thing you are looking for is "protocol". Is it set to DHCP or static? Is state up or down?

Well Gaim will do all three protocols. It comes with Drake 9, so just fire it up if oyu want to use just one program you can.

Personally I use Gaim for AOL Instant Messenger and a program called Kmess for MSN messenger as I like it's interface better, and finally LICQ for ICQ.

The problem I have at the moment is almost exactly the same.

Mandrake 9.1
SiS 900 ethernet card
D-Link 704P router
Motorola Cable modem from Rogers Cable

At Mandrake control center,

Protocol: DHCP
State: Up

I have Win2000 running on another partition on the same computer, and the internet works fine there.

I also went to D-Link to download new firmware.
http://support.dlink.com/Products/vi...d=DI-704P/revB

However, I couldn't run the .bin file in Mandrake. Mandrake can see the file, but it won't run.

Any help would be great. Thnx.
