problems with 2 network cards

I'm using gentoo linux 2006.0 and I have 2 network cards installed - one for a local network and one for a cable modem (for internet), both configured through dhcp. Now if I let the cable from the local network pluged in at boot time, I can't connect to the internet, if I unplug it my internet connection works fine. What should I do to use one network card only for the local network an the other one to connect to the internet(I don't understand why it isn't working with both my network cards simultaneously, in windows I don't have to do a thing it automatically uses one card for internet and the other one for the local lan).

Thanks!

Never setup dhcp but here is a thought when the cables are plugged in and booted up. What does the command ' ifconfig -a ' show. Then do it the other way that works and do the same. Post the output from each. Might check dmesg command to see if any errors popup.

You are not letting the local network nic get and IP are you. If so that to me seems wrong you should define an IP on this card based on the Subnet you defined in your dhcpd.conf file. Post the contents of that as well. If say using 192.168.1.100 - 150 then I would deifne lan nic as IP 192.168.1.1 and subnet 255.255.255.0. No Gateway defined. IP Forwading will take care of that for you.

I wonder if it is pulling and cable side IP from the dhcp server itself instead of from the provider.

Well the dhcp server works just fine, it assigns the ip's to the network cards fine. The thing is that both the cards have the same subnetmask and I think that the OS doesn't know what card to choose for the internet and for the local network.
