Problem with VNC

Hi,
I have been trying to setup VNC(through putty)in my dedicated server(located in a remote location). Currently the vncserver works, but I'm not able to connect to it using vncviewer. When connecting from the local machine it gives the following message

vncviewer: unable to open display ""

When connecting remotely from a windows machine I get the following

Error : failed to connect. connection timed out.

Could anyone help me to fix this problem ASAP. I need it to be up and
running with VNC soon.

Thanks.

Usually the vncserver run on :1 display. So to connect to it you must run:
Code:
vncviewer machine:1
It also listens to port 5901 (i.e. 5900+diplay number), so you must open that port on your firewall if you run one.

Regards

if you are using putty to create a ssh connection to your remote linux server I assume you are using windows as the client. Its easy enough to tunnel the VNC traffic over ssh. In putty click on tunnels and have an entry in the table where the source port of 5900 tunnels to 127.0.0.1:5900 You may want to creat another entry for 5901 -> 127.0.0.1:5901 When you have saved this config, opened it up you can then tunnel the VNC connection (127.0.0.1:0 or 127.0.0.1:1 depending on your vncserver config) and you will have VNC over a secure ssh connection. If you want to be able to view the :0 display I can help configure xorg.conf so you can see and control the desktop that is currently running on the server. I use this a lot to control my home machine over ssh from work.
Hope this helps,
woppa
