Problem with upgrading and downloading using FTP's

Hello,

I have this problem with my router, whenever I try to upgrade packages it fails to download and times out(?). Well, this first happened to me when I used the Debian netinst disk,it would download/upgrade a few files then stop somewhere in the middle, I usually got around this problem by disconnecting my computer from the router and connecting it directly to the modem.

Right now Im using a different distro and I cant upgrade my packages because of this problem and I cant connect my computer to the modem directly because other members of my family are using the net.

How should I configure my router so that I could upgrade packages properly?

Thank you for your time.

Mike

PS Please forgive my English...

PPS I may have titled this thread wrong... once again, please forgive.

Normally routers don't prevent access to resources
on the Internet. It's possible that something is
misconfigured on your router. Is there a way to
set it back to the original settings from the
factory? If so, try doing this and reconfigure
it again.

If it still doesn't work, it's possible that you
have a bad router. See if you can get assistance
from where you bought it.

Do you mean "modem" in the original, i.e. dial-up, sense; or the new, & in many minds incorrect, broadband sense, i.e. "the-black-box-in-between-my-LAN-&-the-ISP's-wire".

Hello,

On the first post: Ive tried restoring it to factory settings, but I'm still having that problem. I'll try contacting the store where I bought it. Thank you for your time.

Just say "cable modem" or "DSL modem" -- there's no point in arguing whether "modem" is an appropriate term for such devices. Just be aware that for many of us the term "modem" implies dial-up if it's not qualified.

And before anyone says that the word "router" is a give away, I used to connect to 'Net through a router to a dial-up modem. I even have a friend who bought a dial-up wireless router, it has built-in (dial-up) modem configurable through a web interface.
