Is your modem a usb or a ethernet one? Are you using it as a router (connected to a hub/switch and sharing it to a lan) or as a bridge (connected directly to your computer) ?

if you are using it as a ethernet router, just config your ethernet card to dhcp, and probaly you will be online.
