ive been doing alot of googling and I am finding tutorials i just dont really understand them a whole lot so i was wondering if anyone here can point me to a tutorial or just tell me how to pring to my room mates printer. He shared the printer i have his ip address i just dont understand how to make it so i can print to it.
Not having used Suse
I'm guessing a little here
( I use Mandrake )
but have you tried using Webmin
Its usually a standard on most distros
Theres plenty of documentation for Webmin
Make sure also that
Suse will drive your room mate's printer
Check that it is not a win-printer
Webmin will configure all sorts of things on your computer
including Printers, Samba, Squid, Apache etc etc
its worth a look if it comes with Suse
I checked and i do have webmin installed however it says that to access it i type http://localhost:10000 into my web browser. I do that and it says that it cannot access localhost on port 10000 does this mean that probably the college is blocking this port? how can i get around this?
Your college can't be blocking the port because you are trying to access your port 10000 from your computer. Have you started webmin? You can always bypass webmin and just launch konqueror, in the location put "print://Manager" if that doesn't work try it with one less or one more / . You can also just type http://localhost:631/ into your browser and then use that config tool
Glad you mentioned that its a HP printer
Linux usually will drive those
unless its the latest model in which case you may have to wait
for the right drivers to come out
Win Printers are printers that are only supported by MS Windows
( or where Linux support for that printer is a little flacky )
( I've had fun getting some Canon models to work )
same situation as Winmodems
Its always a good idea when buying new gear
such as printers, modems etc
to check whether or not its supported by Linux
these forums are an excellent source of information
Now as to to Webmin
You will have to log in as Root
as you need Root permissions to use Webmin
You could try "Run" webmin
if Run is in your start menu
Do get hold of the Webmin docs and howtos
Are there any other types of Printer setup wizards
in Suse
For Instance Mandrake has Control Centre
doesnt Suse have yast
have you tried using this tool
dont give up
Linux is always a big learning curve
floppy
Remember : The only stupid question is the one you dont ask
and put in as much info about the system in question
as practical and relevant
