(during the typing of this, I solved the problem, though I leave the message for help to others)
1.- To confirm that my Linux detects what's in the Win98 machine I type at the shell:
Quote:
user@linux:~> smbclient -L thewin98box

So the name for the laser printer is HP1300
2.-
The Win98 machine is any of "thewin98box" (the name of the machine given inside Network configuration of Win machine) or "192.168.0.5" (or any valid IP for the win machine)
That is what the link given suggests (while in YaST and configuring a new printer connected USING SMB), though in my case using the IP address leads to ONE BIG DIALOG BOX with error, which makes one think there was communication but with a problem. Using "thewin98box" name instead of the IP address, leads to a smaller dialog box with an error as well.
IN ANY CASE THAT STAGE OF CONFIGURATION in YaST ,LEADS TO AN ERROR MESSAGE.
Consider the small dialog box as ok, specially if you've done the following test at the shell.
If one tests the same using smbclient //thewin98box/hp1300 it connects perfectly (a terminal very much like FTP's lftp, not much to do there though the connection is done).
Try a wrong print queue name i.e.: smbclient //thewin98box/hpwrongname and you will see it fails, just so you feel that the previous connection was 100% successful.
If now one tries to make such connection with IP address instead: smbclient //192.168.0.5/thewin98box, SURPRISE, it will report the last lines given in the BIG DIALOG BOX WITH ERROR in YaST
WHAT THE LINK SAYS ABOUT THE ERROR GIVEN IS TRUE, don't get fooled by the error message given when you've just input the queue name (i.e. HP1300), wait to select your printer and test for actual printing page.
Hope this helps.
