I wanted to set up a home network to enable file and printer sharing.

Probably noone has yet answered your post because this is a
really common linux "problem".
If you google for "linux networking" you'll find a load of useful guides.
Basically you'll need to:
Give your computers different names, and probably assign them fixed IP addresses (this makes life easier in the long run).
Make sure each PC knows about the other(s) (see
/etc/hosts)
Install and set up
ssh so you can connect from one machine to another and use
scp to transfer files between them. Make sure the ssh daemon is started at boot time.
Set up
cups and install your printer on one machine (henceforth your "print server")
Configure cups on your print server to allow access to the printer from your other machine(s).
Configure cups on your client machine to connect to your print server.
Have fun printing!
Install and set up
vncserver and
vncviewer so you can access your other desktop(s) remotely.
By the time you have done all this, you'll know a lot more about networking than you do now!
Note: you may run into permissions problems if your usernames on both machines do not have the same UID
Have fun!
