Question pptp VPN setup

I'm trying to set up VPN client using pptpconfig on my redhat box. I need MPPE support for successful connection. I patched the kernel for MPPE suport and modules are registerd successfully. But, pptpconfig fails to start the connection with PPP0 does not exist. I dont understand why.

If any one has gone thru this setup please let me know the clean setup procedure for this. I'm using 2.4.21 kernel.
