pppoe: multiple ppp connections?

Hi,

I am running Debian testing and finding weird problems with my pppoe connections. Firstly, I use pppoe to connect with ADSL. My telco uses dynamic ip's so every few days the ip number changes. pppoe handles this well

Now, the wierd thing that happens is that multiple ppp* devices can spring up which is not good cause I have a script with finds the ip number of ppp0 and reports it so I can access the box, regardless of the dynamic ip. When a new connection pops up, the script is useless and the new connection is 'live' while ppp0 dies.

Has anyone else found this problem when using pppoe? I'm using a dlink dsl-300T adsl modem connected to the box wth a straight cable. Maybe the modem ir the isp we are using are causing the problems?

Thanks

I've just bought a D-Link DSL 300T and yours is the only thread that comes up when I search on that.

I'm currently using an Alcatel Speedtouch which is working fine but I want to shift to BSD
for my Internet facing machine. That's why I bought the D-Link.

I have to use pppoa with the speedtouch and that has worked fine for the last 15 months or so.

I'm quite curious to know how the D-Link copes when the ISP changes your IP address.
Do you have to reboot the modem? Or is is set to DHCP and regularly checking what it's IP address is?
I also wonder what happens to packets sent out during the IP address transition phase.

I have seen multiple pppoa's on Ubuntu with the Speedtouch but I think that was a hardware/firmware
related fault as it occurred during setup and then stopped doing it when I upgraded parts.

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=59999

is the URL for the ebuyer offering on thsi modem. There are some links there for firmware upgrades in the reviews of that hardware.

But I don't know if they are an answer to your problem.

Regards

Lesley B

Thanks for your response.

I haven't yet pinpointed the multiple ppp device problem yet. My main suspect is a dodgy exchange point where this particular modem is connecting to.

About changing IP's, I think PPPoE handles all that.

As soon as I figured the cause, I'll post it here. Meanwhile if anyone else has had the same problem (or even a solution), please post here

Thanks
Nick
