pppd errors out with exit status 17

When I use kppp to connect to the net, I get an error message indicating pppd exited with error number 17. The pppd manpage says the problem is that a serial loopback was detected. I googled a lot and could not find any solutions to this problem. Could anyone help me identify what the problem is and how to fix it? My ISP is vsnl in India. I use Fedora Core 3 and pppd version is 2.4.2.

I was able to solve the problem by mentioning 'nomagic' as argument to pppd. This will ignore loopback related errors.
