Angry "PPP demon died unexpectedly" ..?

I'm running Madrake 9.0 ...

I set up a dialup account fine with no problems using kppp a couple of days ago. The connection has been working fine until today. The modem seems to be dialing up and connecting properly, but it dosn't seem to allow me to send or recieve any data. I dialled up using gppp (what the gnome equivelant is called) and I get the error message "PPP demon died unexpectedly after about 30 seconds. My modem is an external serial modem.

Anyone have any ideas of how to solve this?

Welcome to LQ, Kitch.

When it says that the daemon died unexpectedly, did it give you an exit status number? It would be between 0 and 19. Details of what these mean can be found in man pppd (which you type from a console)

Well...

I've hunted around on both kppp and gnome-ppp, and neither seem to give me an exit code when the demon dies.. I checked the logs for both, and it dosn't show up on them. I also tried running them from a terminal, to find it gives me no information on exit codes when the demon dies either.

I'm currently reading the man page for pppd (very very long:-( ) and am going try to dial up using pppd directly from the terminal. when I've worked out how to do this, will this give me the exit code that I need to root out the prob, or am I goin on a wild goose chase?

also any tips and hints on how to use pppd would be greatfully recieved.

Thanks

kitch
