Ppp

Hello all,
I'm still trying to get ppp to connect. I've read the HOWTOs, and have received help from many people here. I have two systems attached via a direct cable on /dev/ttyS0. When I use minicom, I can log into the other system and all works fine. These two units are side by side on a bench, so I have access to both. I have an HP 4951C Protocol analyzer monitoring the line, so I can see all information each system puts on the line. When I try to start ppp, on the terminal where I run the following command:
pppd -d -detach /dev/ttyS0
I get the following display:

using channel 24
using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS0
Warning - secret file /etc/ppp/pap-secrets has world and/or group access
sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0x1c4ccdf4> <pcomp> <accomp>]

the sent line is sent 10 times and then the following:

LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Connection terminated

This looks like it is trying to work but nothing ever appears on the line! With nothing appearing on the line, the other system's ppp will not wake up and therefore give me a connection. Can anyone give me a clue?

Again, thanks for your help,

Regards,

Bill
