Ping does not work between eth0 and eth1

I have 2 ethernet port configured as follows

ETH0: 192.168.1.11
ETH1: 192.168.1.12

When I try to ping 192.168.1.12 from eth0 the loopback interface lo is used and there is no activity on either of the ethernet ports. Is there any way to 'force' the traffic to go externally.

Perhaps adding a route for eth0 would do it?

Code:
route add -net 192.168.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 dev eth0
(I assumed your router/gateway has IP 192.168.1.1.)

Just curious- why do you need to do this?
