packet monitor and control in linux

Hi

I am using Mandrake 9.1 and mandriva 2006. I am damn in love with the

linux distro, mustly because of it user friendly nature, and easy and time

saving configuration, and I use them as servers and routers, but I dont

know how to use them to block packets or Url of sites I dont want in my

LAN. Can anyone be of great help? Sure, I will be very much appreciative.

Thanks in anticipation. I wont mind if a link is giving me to read up, but

please dont refer me to google search for I have done damn a lot of it but

only came back here for help. Thanks

Don

At a guess, maybe look at something like Squid with either SquidGuard or DansGuardian for blocking certain websites + URL's, depending on what control you want over pages being viewed. As for packets, not sure what you're meaning. Something like a basic firewall set up through iptables lets you control what comes in + out of your network and is probably a good starting point. Things like ethereal let you do a host of monitoring at the packet level, but it depends on what you're after.
