Hi pete tried to configure it again today
still not working pinged myself that went thru.
I am gunna try pinging google now see if that works.
I have tried both automatic TP/DHCP option and manual

typed in everything myself including ip address, netmask, gateway etc still aint working.

Maybe Mandrake doesnt support NTL maybe they had an argument over dinner or something!!!

I am thinking about changing my distro there aint no point in having Mandrake if I cant use the internet!!!!!

Hows it going with u?

Ok now have a full Mandrake install plus working internet, in fact typing this on Mandrake

So I guess you're using Gnome ?

Which would be
System -> Configuration -> Configure Your Computer -> Network & Internet

First I would check and remove any existing connections -> Remove a Connection

So what I did was
New connection -> LAN connection -> Chose my network interface (eth0) -> Automatic IP (BOOTP/DHCP) -> put a "x" in Network Hotplugging and Start at boot leave the other 2 boxes empty -> left Hostname blank -> left Zeroconf host name blank -> select Yes to restart the network

VIA Technologies VT82C686 (Apollo Super AC97 Modem) is nothing to do with ntl this is an internal modem on your computer

If the above fails go here Ntlworld
See if you can spot your modem lets see if there is anything strange about it

You do only have one NIC in your computer and this is the same one windows uses ?

From what I can work out ntl relies on the MAC address of your NIC being registered with them

If this don't work we'll go into windows and see what settings are there

Hi Pete and everyone
I have had a bit of luck
If I type in:
route add default gw 213.105.253.1

It adds a new gateway to the ip routing table which mandrake likes instead of:
Network not connected, eth0 down
I get Network connected eth0 up or something.

Anyways I thought great Iam connected at last even though the default gatway on windoze is 213.105.226.254.
But i try the internet and it just stalls lol
I try to ping and it stalls

It likes the network thing but it aint getting out grrrrrrr

Please help i think I am nearly there!!!
I know i am being a pain in the ass

oh tried live cd knoppix 3.9 that cant get on internet either

do u think it might be because i use the internet on windoze?????
