Hi there,
I recently started learning Linux by using Mandrake 8.1. Now I've set up a home network and there's something strange that I can't figure out. I have a workstation and a server, both M8.1, connected to a combined gateway/firewall/switch from D-Link (713p).
The dlink has the address 10.0.0.1 (I'm getting DSL soon :-), workstation 10.0.0.50 and server 10.0.0.2. NMask is 255.255.255.0 on all.
Now the problem is that when I ping the D-Link from the workstation I get 0% packet loss, but when I ping the server I get lots of packet loss (the icmp_seq skips numbers). This results in when I try to telnet to my server i get "connected. escape character is ^]", but the login prompt never shows. Does this have something to do with the "metric" setting for the nic on server or workstation? This is set default to 1 so I tried to increase it with "ifconfig eth0 metric 5", but got the message "SIOCSIFMETRIC: Operation not supported".
Can anyone help me with this? Thanks in advance!
