I am trying to install zenwalk linux on a really old laptop. I have a 3com 589dt card and when I run lsmod it seems it is in there: 3c589_cs 0 and pcmcia 1 3c589_cs, but when I run ifconfig eth0 up, it says device not found. Where can I start? Thanks
Yes, thank you for your reply. When I go into this screen I don't see eth0 as an option. Th first line is the DNS Servers line. So it doesn't seem to be creating a device for the module.
I believe pcmcia is controlled by cardctl. You could use ident and config to see if you notice anything unusual. You could also use eject and then remove the card. Then reinsert it and see what messages show up in your system logs.
Sorry for being a newbie, should have thought of the system log. HEre is what I found after eject and then reinstall:
pccard: card ejected from slot 1
pcmcia: registering new device mcmcia1.0
1.0: request irq: resource in use
1.0: request irq: resource in use
So it seems it is trying to request and irq already in use, I haven't looked at this before in linux, is there a way to look at the irq's in use and/or which one this one is looking to, then maybe force it to this irq? Thanks.

I am a little weak on irq's in Linx/x86. But here is a response to a similar problem. The OP on that thread was running Slackware 9.0 and zenwalk is derived from slack, so maybe it can give you some guidance.
BTW, we were all newbies once. Sometimes I feel like I am a perpetual "advanced newbie!"
