I have a Dell from 1995 that I just installed RH 7.3 on and everything appears to
be correctly configured, but I have no network connectivity.
Here's the scoop:
3COM 3c509 integrated on Dell motherboard
irq 5, mem 0220-022f 0250-025f
lsmod displays 3c509 used 1
netstat -r
destination gateway genmask flags iface
172.22.8.0 * 255.255.248.0 U eth0127.0.0.0 * 255.0.0.0 U lo
default 172.22.8.1 0.0.0.0 UG eth0
By all I know about networking, this NIC should be working. I disabled the firewall,
but I have received no packets whatsoever. So, dns and ping don't work as a result.
I'm totally stumped here; is there something I'm missing?
Only one suggestion. Does the bios have an IRQ setting for the 3COM? If the IRQ in the driver is wrong, the kernel will not notify the driver of a service request (thus not recieving anything).
Back to basics - since the software is reporting results, I have to ask, do the lights on the HUB blink when a ping request is sent? Is your IP address valid on your network? Can you ping your gateway? Can you ping from another computer WITHIN your network (or do you not have a network)? Have you tested the ethernet cable against a different connection?
Of course, this is just what I can think of... I have been wrong before.
Well, as I said previously, this was an ftp based network install of RH7.3. The cable, the Hub,
T1, and 3c509 integrated were all funtioning correctly. I verified this again today by using
the netboot disk to contact ftp.ttu.edu and began the install proceedure again. I didn't
continue the install after I verified that the DNS and DHCP server are functioning correctly,
and the NIC had good connectivity with the world. Unfortunately this 1995 dell motherboard
has no interactive bios. I thought I'd turn off PnP and various things at that level, but
unfortunately that level doesn't exist. I really only have control of the hardware settings though
/etc/modules.conf
