I have a couple of questions. First I am using Mandrake 9.2 PowerPack, how do I change the name of the computer, it says it is currently 'localhost' as the konsole says 'root@localhost'. Second question, I am using Samba 2.2.8a and I can use LinNeighborhood and see other computers on the network but I cannot see anything they are sharing. Also, they cannot see my computer. Also, I go to K>Configuration>Networking>Samba Configuration and I get an error: "An error occurred while loading localhost:901 Could not connect to host localhost (port 901)".
If anyone can help with either or both of these, it would be greatly appreciated.
I use Redhat, but Mandrake is similar.
You can change the hostname by editing
/etc/sysconfig/network
there is a line HOSTNAME=localhost.localdomain that is the spot.
YOU MUST ALSO update /etc/hosts and put that name in.
as root run hostname name.domain
For example
/etc/sysconfig/network
HOSTNAME=MINE.HOME
/etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain mine mine.home
When your computer boots it reads the /etc/sysconfig/network file and setst the host name. Rather the reboot we can just manually set it by running hostname.
hostname mine.home
Close the current terminal and open a new one. Notice the prompt change.
For swat to work edit /etc/xinet.d/swat and change the line disable=yes to diable=no. Then run
/etc/init.d/xinetd restart
Not it there is no swat file you probably nees to install it. Check your Mandrake CD for
swat*.rpm or samba-swat*.rpm and insall
Thank you so much. In my /etc/sysconfig/network file, the only thing in there was NETWORKING=yes, there was no line HOSTNAME= but I added it, and edited the /etc/hosts file as you said and it worked perfectly. As for the Samba, that worked great too, I successfully shared a folder to a Windows machine.
Actually, the Samba server works great, my Windows XP PC can see and access my Linux shares, however, my Samba client, or something else, does not seem to be configured properly as I can see my Windows XP PC, using LinNeighborhood, but none of the shared folders. Can anyone tell me why, and what I need to do to fix the problem?
