Networking on RH ES 3.0 on a pogolinux system

Bought a Pogolinux system and then installed RH 3.0 on it with static IP and hostname which are in DNS. The network soesn't work. All commands like ifconfig, netstat -nr etc produce the right output (compared to another working linux box). If this were a PnP thing ifconfig -a wouldn't show the interface, right? Hence I am stumped. I cannot ping this machine from outside. If I type ping remotehost on this machine, it just sits there without doing anything (no destination host unreachable message). Same thing if I type telnet or ftp. It just sits there until I kill the command. Made sure the the ethernet cable is plugged in and both green and amber lights blink. If I plug in a W2000 laptop in this port, it has network connection.

Any suggestions?
SS
