Question network timed out ????

Hello all:
I am currently connected to a win xp computer via an ad-hoc network. Everything seems to be ok. I tried to download a Zip file from the win xp computer (3.2 Gig) to the Umbuntu computer, it started out fine but about half way thru the download, the ubuntu 10.10 computer gave me a message that said the connection timed out??? Why should this happen??? I never had this problem with the windows computers connected to each other. Any thoughts on this problem will be greatly appreciated.

Hello rjs1943,

How did you connect the Linux computer to Windows? As you know you'll need smbclient in order to access a Windows-share from a Linux-computer.

Could you please describe in more detail what you've done?

Markus

Network timed out???

Hello Markush:

Thank you for answering this thread so promptly:

OK, Let me see. Being new to Ubuntu, I right clicked on the the network icon on top of the page and manually set it up there. Entering ssid name of the xp computer, entered static ip address of both xp and ununtu computers, entered sub net mask on the xp computer, set the network as an ad-hoc. All this was set up under the wireless tab. Tried it and it worked. I can connect to the xp computer ok, but the xp computer cannot connect to the ubuntu computer. I can download all shared files and folders from the xp computer to the ubuntu computer also, but cannot connect to the ubuntu computer from the xp computer. If I left any out please tell me. Remember I am completely new to Linux and don't understand some of the terminology that is used in this great forum. I am Running Ubuntu 10.10 maverick.

mh, I understood your first post contrary to the second one.

Well, if you want to access the Ubuntucomputer (generally a Linuxcomputer) from Windows, you'll have to configure the Samba-package on the Ubuntu-computer. You may search for Samba in the package-manager, as far as I know setting up samba isn't very complicated with Ubuntu.

Once Samba is configured properly, you can connect from Windows to Ubuntu the same way as between two Windows-computers.

As I mentioned above, the opposite direction, accessing Windows-shares from a Linux-computer works with the smbclient package.
