Hello,

I have several suggestions based on the assumption that your Windows version is XP or 2000.

As you know, when you are in the Printer Wizard you have 3 options to add a Network Printer: Browse for a printer, Universal Naming Convention, and URL

The syntax for the second option, Universal Naming Convention is \\computer name where printer is located\printer name . The syntax for the third option, URL is http://computer where the printer is located/ address of the computer where the printer/Printers/printer name . I noticed from your description that you start your printer address with hp/net/officejet.... This syntax will not work in Windows when adding a printer.

I wish you luck because I am trying to determine how to view Windows computers on a mixed OS network from my Linux machine and view the Linux computer from Windows. On the Linux, I had an easy time with getting the Net connection during installation and adding a printer from a Win XP machine.

Hopefully, the suggestions are helpful.

Sorry Syntax typing error

Hello again,

The correct syntax for adding printer using the URL is

http://computer name where the printer is located/printers/printer name

Sorry about my typing error.

Some Helpful Information

Hello,

I have located some more information that may be helpful to you. Since your's is a mixed networking issue, check out the following links:

* Download and install "Samba": http://www.samba.org
* Samba Setup Guide: http://samba.netfirms.com
* This site has two good links for Windows and Linux networking on the first page. On the Linux link, there is a section for File and Printer sharing between the Linux and Windows OSs.
* From our home page enter "Samba" for all the help that is available.
* The Ubuntu Linux Forum has an excellent thread on "HOW-TO: Setup Samba peer-to-peer with Windows": http://ubuntuforums.org

If I come up with anything else that might be useful, I'll pass it on to you.

Good Luck!

I am rather confused with your question. As you have said that it is a network printer, then why are you connecting it to your linux box? Your network printer will have it's own ip. And if you are connecting it to the linux box you need to configure samba for other windows machine to access it.

if its on my netowrk and linux boxes a\can see it and it has its own ip adress co0nnected to my router that my windows box is connected to why do i need samba i already have samba installed and its alll messed up i tried setuping up netowrk soo that my server can have folders for all the other computers to save download and grab from all mmy computers al staic ip and samba says now thats not ur computers i[ this is ur computers ip not only that but i setup it up so that you dont need passwords and that guest is avialble just becuase i figured that would be the easiet way to set it up for some who never setup samba b4 well i downloaded a gui broswer for samba shares and none of my computers can see the server and my server can see any of the other computers so if i added the printer to samba i would highly doupt that any of the computers cud see it. were as the all see it now other then the windows machine.

If you want to configure windows to print directly to a network printer you can use this as a guide:

Most of the time hp use jetdirect to enable network support for their printers.
Use the information found at the link below.
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...ectID=bpj07058

If not try a internet browser to get access to the printer by using its address (http://192.168.1.42) and find out which share name to use it could be prn or lpt or lpt1.
If you have the correct name you can make a connection by using the command prompt.
net use lpt1: //192.168.1.42/sharename_you_found
