network monitoring software

Which ones would you purchase / use (money not considered, just features, overall impression).

1. Nagios
http://www.nagios.org/

2. ManageEngine OpManager
http://manageengine.adventnet.com/pr...ger/index.html

3. ActiveXperts Network Monitor
http://www.activexperts.com/activmonitor/

4. IP Monitor
http://www.ipmonitor.com/default.aspx

Which would you choose and why?

Note, all these have live demos available.

I've only used nagios but I use it because it is opne source, very reliable and has an excellent checking system which can easily be added to. The host grouping and dependencies are also very useful.

You may also want to look at openmms and ossim.

Nagios works well and can monitor most devices, services and some applications. It has alot of community support and I have never had an issue finding an answer. I have only used it in deployments of up to 50 devices so far but it works well.

The Adventnet products are inexpensive and also work well, they have alot of tools and can monitor devices, processes as well. I am looking at their configuration tool now. I am looking forward to replacing an openview system with it

Ossim

I had never used anything before. This is my first IT job. So I know I have a long way to go in tuning nagios but with OSSIM I just ran a scan of our network, selected the hosts to be monitored and it inserted them for me. Very nice. I was also able to use OSSIM/NTOP to find some desktops that are attempting lots of connections to other desktops. So it's already helping me clean up our network.

I have used Nagios before and it was good. What I like better, at this point is, www.zabbix.com. Nice tools/plugins to monitor applications/servers and a neat interface. Give it a shot.

Gave Zabbix,Zenoss and Groundwork look. They all are nice but I really liked the OSSIM combo of OCS,GLPI,Nagios,Snort,Nessus,Ntop, and Arpwatch.
