Network Monitoring


Hi all ,

I would like to monitor my LAN and monitor the logs for that ,plz suggest me the best monitoring tool for fedora or Cent OS.

To monitor, use Nagios. For the logs, I guess Splunk.

Hi,

There are also plugins for Nagios/Groundwork to monitor logs for certain strings. Have a look at MonitoringExchange to see if any of them suit your needs. Or you could write your own plugins of course.

OpenNMS is pretty good too. It has great SNMP support.

If you have a network tap, or a switch that supports SPAN, check out Ntop.

Regarding the log question, do you mean logs generated by your monitoring system? Or just network logs in general like router/switch/firewall, SSH, Apache, etc., logs? If it's the former, you don't need to monitor the logs as almost all tools these days have nice web guis, or even email notifications. If it's the latter, check out Ossec, Logwatch and Splunk.
