Network Fedora 4 with windows XP/2K

Linux Newbie here !!

I managed to get fedora 4 set up as a duel boot with XP.
Now I need to ask for help on the networking part.

D-link router DHCP working. 3 pc's XP home win2K XP /Fedora 4 duel boot.
The fedora 4 PC I think I have Samba Server running . Anyway I set up a share on the FC4 box and it won't find it's own share. I can browse the windows PC's from the FC4 box . Same with the windows pc's I can see the fc4 box but get an error when I try to browse it.

The XP machine shows the FC4 box with the name I gave it plus (localHost)
at the end in the title.
What do I need to do to shut down the server and install a client to share with windows machines. Thanks Allan

Question Same Boat...

I am also new to linux and so far I love it but, before I can have fun with my new Fedora Core I need to get things with the network straightened out. I have a Wireless network but only the WinXP receives wireless. My Dell Laptop has Fedora Core 4 and receives Internet Access through the XP system via network bridge and LAN. Before I had XP on this laptop but I wanted Linux. Linux obviously gets the internet connection but no file/printer sharing nor LAN Multiplayer games (StarCraft, Diablo IIx, etc). I've messed with a few settings here and there but, this localhost thing and the XP system saying that the names is a duplicate is keeping me from the connection. Before, when both PCs were XP File/Printer Sharing was ok AND at the same time Internet Access was good even though it was bridged.

Can someone please help us and/or tell what more info you need.

Thanks

I figured out one thing about the networking issue with Newbies like us. LOL
SAMBA server is a NO NO . Don't use it or touch it. Shut it OFF we want the SMB client. this is samba but not the server. With the server running and configured the same as the windows work group you have set up things get all messy LOL.
I'm running SuSe 10 now . Seem to have had better luck networking it than fedora 4. Also The fire wall will lock up any incomming and outgoing requests. I haven't figured it all out yet so I shut it off for now as well.

Alan,

Samba is the way to go if you want to share your Linux box with Windows. You just need to setup your smb.conf right. This file is located in /etc/samba. If you give me more information about your network like workgroup & userid. I can help you to set it up. As for the firewall, you have to deal with iptables and selinux. To turn off iptables, execute this command at the prompt "service iptables stop" and "setenforce 0" to turn off selinux.

Dracon,

make sure your computer name for your Linux is different than your windows. Also make sure they are not using the same IP address.
