Ok guys- before anyone yells "GOOGLE" please let me explain.
Talking to the tech support guy- He's really excited about exploring the possibility of a linux server. (!!!) This school is on the fence in regard to linux- I really want to do it right and convince them it is the way to go.
SO:
can anyone reccomend a good guide/howto/tutorial that talks about migrating servers from win to linux? I need to know about transfering user info and data yadda yadda- (I found a good one for the mail server btw)
I'm a server newbie so I need a good indepth guide that has been used and reccomended. (not just a google search- actually reccomended)
thanks guys. I'm sorta pressed for time- I would have looked at google etal but this is really important, and I don't want to stuff up.
I never get what everybody means by "migrate". For data, the cp command and CD-RW backup seems like it would work. As for configuration, most of the time the default is fine (for me) and may only need just a little bit of tweaking.
I don't recommend "doing" a migration off of a tutorial or a book.
This takes a concerted effort in many cases. We're not just talking about changes of operating systems. We're talking about changing the networked environment.
It's naive to think that you can just copy the users' data from one machine to another and it work magically. There can be dozens if not hundreds of variables in "production" environments - not to mention creation of new security guidelines.
my sentiments exactly, Kdr, but I guess in a slightly different application. what I meant was it's not going to be easy, but if I have some prior knowlege (re howto) then it will be easier to make it look easy. I don't want a "click here" and "enter this" howto- I want a textbook for learning- not the answer sheet. And, looking around, I found the Linux System Administrator Guide on tldp.org (the linux documentation project) is this a reccomended "text book" ?
