Cool

I'm a newbie to Linix. I just install Mandrake 8.0 (3 CD Version) on a dedicated computer. As a newbie I have several questions I'm hoping one of you veterans can help me with.

1. Is it possible for Linix to co-exist on and be accessible to a Windows LAN, i.e. can the computers "see" each other?

2. After installation I was able to load my personal web page from a computer on my LAN via Netscape and I assume, the internet. I can't get to any other sites outside the building. The Linix box is on the LAN sharing a cable modem. What do I have to do to use the internet on the Linix box? I noticed that the ethernet card is loaded on startup.

Thanks and I hope I'm not being a pest.

Yes, for this to happen, you will have to setup a program called samba, for shares to be used between your linux box and Windows

As long as your gateway (and the linux box is setup to use it) is setup to foward packets form that machine to the outside world, it should work, but not enought information is given. Im assuming its a windows computer that has the cable modem on it. If you already have other computers on your LAN sharing the connectoin, it should be just as simple as giving the linux box an IP address and specifing the IP address of the computer with the cable modem as your gateway.
