Mandrake 10.0 internet connection problem

I just downloaded and installed Mandrake 10.0.
I have a lan connection to the internet, and am using a via-rhine II ethernet adaptor. My ip-address, dns settings and gateway are configured fine. Still i get the notification that the network is down.

I would appreciate any help.

I used to have a similar problem on Mandrake 9.2 with the same type of network card. Initially try to add the following to your grub or lilo kernel options "noapic" according to this thread forum http://hardware.mcse.ms/message14595.html . If that doesn't work, delete all network connections and run the network setup again. It doesn't always work and at one time I had to completely reinstall. Search on other threads/forums or the web, there maybe a better solution.
