Pin 2 is RX i.e. incoming data to PC
Pin 3 is TX i.e data from the PC.

A NULL modem cable switches pins 2 and 3 at one end of the cable so that TX -> RX for both devices. You will need to use pin 3 from both devices.
I saw other examples using two diodes and I that would be my preference but the other should work.
