lpr printing working but not everywhere

I'm having a wee bit of trouble printing from my LibraNet/Debian installation running KDE.

I am printing to a remote printer on a windows network. My /etc/printcap file entry looks like this.

lp|laserjet4:\ :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
:lp=:\
:if=/usr/lib/printfilters/directprint:\
:rm=172.16.22.9:\
:rp=text:\
:sh:

I have LPR servers installed. I can print simple test pages from a command line using lpr <file name>

But I can't print using Mozilla or other applications like AbiWord. In each I had changed the print command to lpr

I've played with the CUPS, by installing the debian package and going through the kprint. But that didn't work either. So I have two questions:

* Can anyone help me get lpr to print in these applications (mozilla, abiworld)?

* I've gone through a couple simple tutorials on printing, but I still can't seem to understand why CUPS or anything else is of value. Isn't there just a simple way to make linux print things? Or is it worth the time to get to know these different print servers and all the guts?

thx much

eric
