linysys NIC EG1032 problem with red hat linux 8

Hi all,
I have a question on the linksys NIC EG1032 v2. When I do a lspci, I got:

02:09:0 Ethernet controller: Unkown device 1737:1032(rev 12)

When I do modprobe sk98lin, I got:
/lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/net/sk98lin/sk98lin.o: init_module: No such device

My computer has a dual boot on Windows 2000 and Red Hat Linux 8. The card works fine in Windows 2000. however Linux could not even detect it.

I have looked at old threads about linksys NIC and have not found anyone had a similar situation. Could someone please help me?

Thanks in advance!

Well... considering RedHat 8 is 4-5 years old, I am very surprised that the sk98lin driver is even in the kernel. I use the same driver on my laptop to support 1000Mbit card, those kind of card were almost non-existent 5 years ago, so...

I really suggest to switch to a newer distribution or at the very least to a newer kernel. Running RH 8 is like running win98 on the latest P4 : useless, lack of features and hardwares support, big security risk and loss of performance.

Thank you for your suggestions. I will try Red Hat Linux 9.

RedHat 9 is 3 years old... you better go with Fedora, which is the new version of the RedHat line.

Many thanks to Half Elf. I have another question before I go to Fedora. When I install the NIC drive in linux 9, I got an error message said "kernel header files not found. Install Linux header files development package." Does it mean I do not have source files installed? I did an installation from installation CD. How may I fix this problem? Thank you!

The kernel and the header are not exactly the same... it would be complex to explain, but let's say they come both in different package...
If you choose default installation on most RedHat-like you don't get all the development tools and packages, as the kernel headers, gcc, g++, make and all these things you need to compile sources. If you need those, you need to choose them while you install or to get them later.

But you shuoldn't need to compile the driver, Fedora should be able to handle your network out of box.

Thanks!

I just installed Fedora core 4. It works right away like magic. Thank you so much for your time!
