Exclamation linux router bandwidth

Hello all !

I have a dedicated linux box which acts as a router for my internal network.

dev eth0 : external interface: internet : static ip : 276.78.92.189 : gateway : 276.78.92.1

dev eth1 : internal network : intranet : assigned : 198.186.0.1 : gateway : nil

The external interface is a high speed ISDN line at about 2 Mbps

I have 10 intranet interfaces which i want to be connected to the internet.

Routing is set up and successfully running :

The problem is : when someone starts downloading on one host of the intranet the router seems to be dedicating the entire bandwidth of 2Mbps to that single host, where as the other hosts are brought down to their knees waiting to get internet access.

Is there a way : whereby i can control the amount of bandwidth delivered by the router to every single host and keep it say under 256Kbps ??

In simple terms i do not want the router to distribute more than 256Kbps of bandwidth to a single host at a given point of time out of the total available 2 Mbps bandwidth that the router has

Ideas anyone ??

You need traffic shaping which an install of IPCop will probably give you along with some other wonderful features.

Hi,

QoS is a solution
http://www.rns-nis.co.yu/~mps/linux-tc.html

Another (much simpler) is using new extensions of iptables
http://www.netfilter.org/documentati...ons-HOWTO.html
look for the fuzzy extension

I wrote a QoS script for my home router that's supposed to distribute the bandwidth in a fair manner among the clients in the LAN. However, it only works with static LAN ip's and doesn't support firewalls (yet).

Maybe it can be of use anyway: http://www.metamorpher.de/fairnat/
