Linux client -> Linux server 'Permission denied' when copying file to samba share

Hi all,

Please excuse my ignorance. I am a complete linux newbie.

I have installed a linux server (ubuntu 11.04) on an old pc. The server is running fine and has a share named 'Videos' set up using samba.

I want to copy a file from my linux client home directory to the Videos share. I can connect to the drive via network but when i try and paste the file into the samba share i get permission denied.

If you're only ever going to do Linux to Linux sharing then you should use a Linux mechanism like NFS. Samba is awesome, but it's an open source clone of Microsoft's NetBIOS/Server Messaging Block protocol. Samba was designed to allow sharing files and printers across differing platforms.

As to your problem, there could be various causes which result in 'Permission Denied'. You need to make sure that you have configured the samba share to grant the write permission to the share. You need to make sure that you have created a samba user on the server and on the client with the same username and password and you need to make sure that the client has mounted the remote share with the correct mask and UID definition to allow writes.

This sounds like a lot so maybe you can start by posting your smb.conf file and the mount.cifs syntax you're using to mount the share on the client.

Most likely the samba-exported directory (i.e. on the server where you are trying to write) doesn't have permission for the samba user. do "chown $user Videos" (assuming that you exported dir vidieos from the server, and $user is whatever your samba user - perhaps ubuntu user on the server, but hopefull the same on both systems..)

cheers
Artem.
