Hey all... after following all the suggestions on this thread I finally got my WPC11 to work on Redhat 8.0... there is only one problem... since I dont use a Wireless DSL/Cable router... I need to dial my connection manually in the operating system... HOWEVER.... the network settings dont list my WPC card as an interface... so I cant configure a ppp* device to use my WPC11 card as a dialer... any suggestions?

Also... how do I set it up so that my IP address stays the same without having to do an ifconfig every time I reboot and get into KDE?

That's an 802.11g card? Nope, if there's any Linux driver work being done for it, best check Jean's page:

http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_...s.drivers.html

Ignore the date at the top, its been updated since then. You might want to plug 802.11g into sourceforge and see what turns up, almost all of the wireless driver projects have a page there somewhere.

Right now 802.11g is sort of the redheaded stepchild of the wireless protocols. If you find drivers for it, post back!

Cheers,

Ok got a question... I've gotten everything to work (at least enough to sniff for networks). Now I have a laptop with awpc11 and an iPAQ with a similiar CF card. I have no AP cause I'm on travel for the week. How do I get the iPAQ and the laptop to create a network between the two of them via Adhoc?

thanks in advance,
jpbarto

It depends on the driver set for the WPC11, if you are using the linux-wlan drivers, change the wlan-ng.opts script in /etc/pcmcia, and give your machine a set channel, say 4, a set essid, and then after the card is activated, give it an IP address with a standard "ifconfig" command. If its using the orinoco_cs driver:

iwconfig eth0 mode ad-hoc
iwconfig eth0 essid bob
iwconfig eth0 channel 4
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.1

For instance... Then set the IPAQ to the same, well... not the same IP, sure, but ah... I dunno how those things work anyway.

Cheers.

finnegan thanks for the help. As for the iPAQ and how it works... hell I barely know myself. My company bought them for one of our projects and for being a watered down windows they're just as difficult to manipulate (when you don't want to do wizards or when you need to configure more details than what is allowed).

thanks again, I'll let you know the results after playing with it a bit more.

Hey, if they have a "start", "run", "cmd" and you can get a win32 shell, I'd be amazed if they yanked the command line ftp interface, but with one of those tap-pad qwertys that's just going to be a nightmare. Maybe one of the "sync" toys has an ethernet option?

Cheers,
