Link failover trigger.

Hi friends,

Is there any tool to check the actual state of an ethernet link and trigger some events upon failure, like running a script?

What i need is something similar to UCARP or Hartbeating, but in my case i have two machines, sharing the same IP address (one in active state and the other in backup state) acting as firewalls between internet and my internal network. The problem is that when one of the link fails, no matter wich link, i can trigger something (a script for example) that comunnicate with the backup script, bringing it to master state and bringing the actual master to a backup state, this way monitoring the links between te two segments of my network. I guess i would call it link failover. I hope i'm explaining it right.

I would like to thank in advance for any help.

Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VRRP) addresses this. See SourceForge for vrrpd.

It has keepalive messages, master and backup states, config/state transfers. Your machines will have real and virtual IPs for easy access/configuration.
