Okay I'm pretty new too linux, and know nothing about networking. I need to network my friends laptop running knoppix to the school network. How do I do this. I know we have the connection because I can do ifconfig and ping the first ip address(which is under ethernet). Any help?? The school computers run Windows XP and the school server is microsoft too. He can acsses his drive from his windows install on his laptop. If this works he will probably do a dual boot.
\\thsdata1\Linux.Rules$\ is the location of the drive. Linux.Rules being a persons name.

What is the subnet (range of IP addresses) that the school uses? Does the school have a DCHP server? If so, edit /etc/network/interfaces on the laptop and put something like this in it:

iface eth0 inet dhcp
network x.x.x.1
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway x.x.x.1
broadcast x.x.x.255

Replace the x's with the IP address of the subnet.

hmm using ifconfig on the school network on a windows box i got these numbers. Sadly I forgot to write down what they are they are:
130.151.122.133
255.255.255.0
130.57.122.7
How would I get the subnet from that?? I dont think there would be one with that config, Since its class C. Couldn't i also do something with route?? hmm Thanks for the help so far. Also how would I get the subnet otherwise??? And how did you know that network ended with 1 and gatewa with 1 and broadcast with 255(whatever broadcast is)

In most networks, the gateway is (almost) always x.x.x.1 (usually it's the IP of the router or something linked to the next network, like the Internet for example. Broadcast packets always go on the upper limit of the subnet (usually 255). From the numbers you have above, it looks like you listed the IP address you had, the subnet mask, and the gateway. So with Knoppix (a Debian-like distro) your /etc/network/interfaces would look like (I think):

iface eth0 inet dhcp
network 130.151.122.1
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 130.57.122.7
broadcast 130.151.122.255

It looks like the gateway is on a different subnet, but try that and see if it works...
