Kernel recompiling

Hi all,
am trying to block p2p from my network. while researching i came across layer 7 L7 filter to do it.
From what i read from this link: http://www.howtoforge.com/how-to-set...r-on-centos5.1, iam kind of confuse cos i run on centos 4.6 kernel version 2.6.9-67. now do i have to recompile my kernel to be able to install and run l7 or would it run well with my kernel untouched? thanks alot for your answers.

it patches the kernel, so you need to recompile after the patching
