ip forwarding and routing

Hi,

I had one doubt which i've expressed before but have got no reply. I want to know what exactly ip forwarding and ip routing does. If i've enabled ip forwarding without routing, then can i communicate with other networks? If i don't enable forwarding and put routes then can i communicate with other networks? I am not clear about the difference between the two. Can anyone please give me brief explanation on those?

Thanks

forwarding *IS* routing, i.e when a machine is given ip packets from other machines which are not destined for the machine itself it will attempt to pass them on towards the intended recipient. where are you seeing these terms? "routing" could mean a routing protocol, which you'd have no interest in, of an expanded static routing table, either way these in themselves are not "routing", just how to do the routing once it's already enabled.
