Lightbulb Internet Speed

I am using a software Conexant modem 56K in Mandrake 9.0 with linux drivers from mbsi.ca, It has been working fine until this last while, I get "no carrier" and "pppd died unexpectedly" errors in Kppp and it use to be faster now it takes forever to load a page. Any help would be appreciated...
