Internet connection doesn't work


i reinstalled my debian box through a netinstall cd. I'm connecting to the net through a router. I get an ip adress of the router, but can't access the internet. I can ping the modem,other pc's in the lan. First i thought it was my onboard NIC which gave me these probs, bought a new one same prob. pinging outside gives me 100% packetloss. ifconfig eth0 down/up isn't a solution. dhclient goes well, it's renewing the ip adress without problems. route gives me :

Code:
Destination    Gateway            Genmask              Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
192.168.1.0       *              255.255.255.0      U         0      0     0    eth0
default        my.router         0.0.0.0            UG        0      0     0    eth0
tried to do :

route add default gw 192.168.1.1 eth0

then it gives me file exists.

my router's ip = 192.168.1.1

any ideas?

Maybe leave off the eth0 from your route command? That might be the problem. Seems to me that the issue lies right there, in the router, or the Network information for the router. I looked up the command and it doesn't say to add eth0 on the end.

tried it also without the eth0. with destination it says 192.168.1.0 shouldnt be that 192.168.1.1? can't configure that somehow. Also the part of "default my.router" is assigned by dhcp. couldn't ping "my.router" so put it in /etc/hosts but that didn't work either
any other suggestions?
