Thanks in advance for any input.

I'm currently using sles 9.0. After a fresh installation, I found no such /etc/modules.conf file. I, however, found a comparable /etc/modprobe.conf. Unfortunately, commenting out lines that contain eth[0-9] in modprobe.conf does NOT prevent 3COM network adapter from loading during boot time.
Do u have this directory?: /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts. Check for ifcfg-eth0 in this directory.
If you do have it, vi ifcfg-eth0 and change the line from ONBOOT=yes to ONBOOT=no
