I wanted to backup a usb ministation drive to my synology ds218 but it halted at the error below

Error while copying "401.html".

- Symlinks not supported by backend - which is a file from a website I support.

It would appear to be the synology has an issue but that seems unreasonable?

There were 2 more files same sort of naming.

After skipping the 3 files the copy is now continuing.

I just used terminal to make a backup of ~ 600MB to my 4TB mirror, nothing fancy.

I have copied about 2TB to that drive in the year or so I've had the Synology, a vast variety, no such errors.

First time using a Linux PC to do one. ( Linux Mint 20.1 Ubuntu 20.04)

Not enough details.

If you are connecting to the NAS via samba/CIFS that would make sense since the protocol does not support symlinks. You can copy the symlink via nfs but if viewed it will probably appear to be broken.
If you tar the website backup as a single file then it would not matter how you transfer the files.

Used a feature of the Synology to work around this

The DS-218 has a USB on the back which I plugged the mini-station into and did the copy from that.

Thanks for the help!
