I need LAN help

Hello,
I have several questions about my LAN. First I am using a linksys router to assign ip address to all my computers. I have 2 winxp machines and my linux machine. I set up konquerer so that i can browse the LAN. My question is how do i have my linux machine retrieve the comptuer "names" that winxp sets? eg familycomputer and show that instead of an ip address in the lan browser? Second, how do i rename my comptuer from localhost to something else like linuxmachine? One last question, how do I share a directory on my linux machine so that the windows machines can access them? I am able to access files on my windows machine so I think that I have samba set up at least partially. I am running Red Hat 7.3 and am using the DHCP of my linksys router to assign ip address. Thanks.
Ryan

To share a directory so that windows can access it, you should use a samba server.
your machine name can be changed using a tool such as linuxconf (netconf) or ifconfig or netconfig.

Did you try GOOGLE??? it is a very nice tool for linux users!!!

please, while you look for a better answer for your problem try to find the "how to make good questions" file, it is very usefull.

Thank you for responding.
The only command that my machine recognizes is ifconfig. I am unsure how I use that to change my computers name. Also how do I start/configure samba? Is there a graphical tool to use or is it all text based? I am running Red Hat 7.3 and using the KDE windows manager.

Ok. lets see. graphical interface... don't think so. try linuxconf (you won't have it installed with normal 7.3) You can download it from ftp.redhat.com To start it you need it installed (i think it is something like smbd1.1.1-1.rpm but I'm not sure.

I've checked adn I couldn't change mi machine name wirh ifconfig. I insist, download linuxconf and it will be easy to configure anything. You could also try with "setup"

Configuring a SAMBA server should be easy, just modifying a few files.

I INSIST, try www.google.com to look for some answers, or perhaps www.tldp.org There are thousands of sites where you can get that info!

For downlaods you can go to ftp.redhat.com/pub/contrib/libc6/i386 there are ALL the RPM's
