Unhappy Wounded with samba

Hello Everybody

I am really Wounded while playing with samba. Can anybody please help me?

I have following setup
My linux box
Mu colleague's win-me box

I have installed samba 2.2.2 on my RH7.1 linux machine.
My smb.conf is in /usr/local/samba/lib
which reads like
# Samba config file

# Global parameters
[global]
workgroup = excelinux
netbios name = excelinux
server string = %h's Linux Samba Server
interfaces = 10.1.1.9 10.1.1.10/24
encrypt passwords = No
null passwords = No
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
max log size = 50
socket options = TCP_NODELAY
os level = 99
preferred master = Yes
guest account = smbuser
hosts allow = 10.1.1. 127.
[homes]
comment = Home Directories
path = %H
valid users = %s
read only = No
create mask = 0750
browseable = no
[public]
comment = Public Place
path = /home/public
read only = No
directory mask = 0775
guest ok = Yes
[data]
comment = Data
path = /home/samba/data
read only = No
create mask = 0660
directory mask = 0770
guest ok = Yes
[cdrom]
comment = Linux Box CD Drive
path = /mnt/cdrom

I have set the workgroup for "harish" as "excelinux"
and basically this win-me box logs in to NT with domain name "excel01"

My
/etc/hosts reads
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
10.1.1.10 rajesh excelinux.excelapparels.com
10.1.1.9 harish
/etc/lmhosts reads
localhost rajesh
harish harish

/etc/hosts.allow is blank

/etc/hosts.deny reads
ALL: ALL

Now the problems are like this.
1) whether I must include /usr/local/samba/bin
and /usr/local/samba/lib in PATH ?

2) when I do smbclient -L localhost -N
I get
[root@excelinux bin]# ./smbclient -L localhost -N
can't determine netmask for 10.1.1.9
added interface ip=10.1.1.10 bcast=10.1.1.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
Anonymous login successful
Domain=[EXCELINUX] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 2.2.2]
Sharename Type Comment
--------- ---- -------
public Disk Public Place
data Disk Data
cdrom Disk Linux Box CD Drive
IPC$ IPC IPC Service (excelinux's Linux Samba Server)
ADMIN$ Disk IPC Service (excelinux's Linux Samba Server)

Server Comment
--------- -------
EXCELINUX excelinux's Linux Samba Server

Workgroup Master
--------- -------
EXCELINUX EXCELINUX

3) I cant see my linux box and /home/samba
/home/harish or /home/public from win-me machine.

4) Sorry to ask but... what is my host name ?
if my prompt is
[root@excelinux]
while setup i had put it as excelinux.excelapparels.com
AND HOWTO CHANGE MY HOST NAME since when I try to do it
from netconf or linuxcont tool I can key in nothing in
the specified field. Dont know the reason.

5) How can "harish" on win-me have access to my cd drive ?

I am desperately searching and trying for samba stand up
and work the desired tasks for me. But really I am helpless
without your help.

Awaiting reply
Thanks a millions.
Rajesh

We appreciate you letting everyone know you know about samba and willing to help out, but there isn't really a need to start a thread, most people who answer questions here just answer them, so its best to just sit back and wait then go after samba related problems if you find them.

Starting a thread like this, we don't want everyone just asking their questions in your thread, it could get messy.

Thanks,

trickykid

Im gonna go outta order.. sorry if its inconvinient.

your prompt of [root@excelinux] means that you are loged in as linux. and that your computers hostname is "excelinux".

I know that "netconfig" will allow you to defin your host and workgroupname. I trust that you are aware that if they linix box's and the windows box's workgroup name isnt exactly the same, they wont see eachtother, so make sure that they are the same.

#3) If you cant see the nix box on the workgroup, theres no way your going to see its shares.

Now... Im curious, do you have or have you set up samba users? if not you may try creating one and try it after youve confirmed that your comps are running on the same workgroup.

Try using those tips, and report to me with what you find or have probelms with. I shal and help you more when youve done this.
