how to see if network card is up ?

Hi !

I issued the command :

ifconfig eth1 down. ( looked that the interface went down beacuse I didnt receive any error message).

then I issued the command ifconfig -a to look for the word down just to be sure that the nic went down cut I didnt found a clue about this...

how can I be shure that the nic is down?

[root@snort_jr_dmz root]# ifconfig -a
eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:02:B3:24:EF:AE
inet addr:213.107.80.53 Bcast:213.107.80.63 Mask:255.255.255.224
BROADCAST PROMISC MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:72458 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:19 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:11089136 (10.5 Mb) TX bytes:1986 (1.9 Kb)
Interrupt:11 Base address:0x1040 Memory:42300000-42300038

thanks !!

Hi,

I confirm, your NIC is down:
Code:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:A0:C9:18:DC:CA
          UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
          Interrupt:5

eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0E:A6:6A:47:1E
          BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
          Interrupt:11 Base address:0x2000
'cause when it's up, you have "UP" printed before "BROADCAST"... When it's down, there's nothing.
