I've been using Linux for a while, but i only use it for desktop use only. Linux can be a server as powerfull as Windows 2003. But there is something that i need to ask you guys :

1. How to login into a Linux server from a Linux/Windows client(my networking knowledge about Linux is none)

2. When i login into a linux server, does linux gives me a GUI just like Windows, or only CLI?

I think that's all for now... i'd really appreciate if you guys can help me by answering my quenstions... it's preety basic i think... so please help me Thank's.

hi,
the question is: what is your intention???

1.) you log into linux "the same" as under windows...
itīs a server, so what do you expect?
if there is a linux-daemon running on the server, you can connect to it from your client!
samba,pop,imap,http,sql,....whatever

2.) where do windows gives you a GUI?
the only case where you can "get a GUI" is via terminal-services.....

otherwise, normally noone (users) should be able to login to servers...

so please specify your intention or question!

Linux is OG. Windows is the emulator.

You can do graphical or command line.

ssh server, telnet server, etc. for command

For graphical- vnc server(multiple encodings aka TightVNC), export ssh xterm(export graphical from CLI), NX server(like Citrix but GPL and RDP based)

Linux has an rdp server called different things in different distro's. rdesktop in some, nxserver in others. Yea, you can terminal service to the desktop like windows if that's what you want. You can vnc to the desktop like any os if you want. How's that?

The most secure way of using an open connection like this is to have a Linux/Linux connection using ssh with RSA keys. If you use kde you can then connect to the server remotely using konqueror in 2 forms fish://<ip_address or server_name if server_name is resolved>/home/user_name or sftp://user_name@ip_address or server_name (if resolved). This would require that you have the ssh daemon running and have port22 open (standard port for ssh). You can also install a vnc server for a M$ connection but i cannot comment on the relative security level of this. Personally I would not be very trusting.

me too.
for secure connection (internet) you could login via ssh (with keys as described above) and then start your X-application.
for normal LAN simple X-redirection (RDP-/XDMCP-based,...) should do.
read that nx-server should be very good, but never tried and I think itīs commercial..?!

Hi there,

If you need a GUI
you could use

1) RDP / XDMCP
2) Vncserver [ Easiest to use ]

CUI based

1) SSH
2) Telnet
